Flower garlands, denim shorts and an abundance of fringing – yep, festival season is upon us. Although the masses flock to rural locations to brave the mud and fast food, it's also a platform to push beauty boundaries and try trends that you wouldn't normally touch with a hairbrush. In a place where the weird is wonderful and your childhood make-up mistakes are re-lived, festivals can be a weekend of liberation without a faux pas in sight.
Headliners aside, music festivals are stacked full of emerging beauty trends so grab a pot of glitter and a pack of stencils and just go with it!
GLITTER UNDER EYEBROWS
As seen on Millie Mackintosh at Glastonbury, this is a subtle way of jumping on the sparkle bandwagon without going the whole hog. Actual shapes such as circles or stars are easier to apply than smaller sprinkles and stay on way past the last act of the day.
Thanks to Kylie Jenner, there's a strong nod to the 90's metallic lip this summer and they made their debut in early music festivals this spring. Depending on your skin tone, a deep nude or brown hue is popular, or if you're feeling really brave, you can opt for an electric blue shade a la Gwen Stefani circa 1997.
Hands up who remembers this in their Barbie doll stage? Channel your inner six-year-old by visiting your hairstylist before you embark on the epic car journey (DIY is not advised as it won't look as slick as a professional).
Yep, we're back on the glitter again but this time it's about embracing the summer with a splattering of gold freckles. Pretty, ethereal and 100 percent accessible to all, it's one of the most sedate festival beauty trends and it suits everyone.
Since the original music festivals of the seventies, plaits have been a leading hair trend of the summer and 2016 is no different. Whether it's braided down a centre parting or bunched in two tribal twists, anything goes this year as long as they're mussed and undone to give it a lived-in look (this won't be a problem after the second day!) Coachella-goers even went a step further by dying their braids bright colours leaving the rest of the hair natural.
As a strong beauty trend straight off the catwalks this season, blue stained peepers are huge for festival-goers. If you're a little nervous to try it in real life, this is the perfect time to give it a trial run. Ease into it with a heavy blue-lined eye using a metallic kohl pencil and work up to a sweeping of blue eyeshadow across the entire lid and into the crease of the socket.
Don't panic, we're not suggesting you take a late-night visit to the needle – white henna hand tattoos were everywhere at Coachella and Glastonbury this year. Think Rihanna on a temporary basis and embrace your inner hippie.
