The Training Room - Personal Trainer Courses

Paula Wells

1) What is your job role?

Hi! I am the Lead Tutor for Leeds Academy. I manage the campus and ensure the smooth running of the courses. I teach, support, guide, advise, motivate and organise our students to help them reach their potential.

2) Why are you so passionate about the health and fitness industry?

The fitness industry originally appealed to me because of its diversity. A fitness professional can pursue classes, Personal Training, sports specific training, nutrition and injury rehabilitation amongst many other avenues. I also believe that it is fantastic to work in a healthy environment and of course to make a real difference to the quality of people’s lives.

3) Please provide a brief summary of your previous experience:

My love for fitness and movement began from an early age through gymnastics and then Ballroom and Latin Dancing. It was a hobby at 8 years old that became a passion. Extreme dedication and discipline projected me onto the competitive platform, representing England internationally. So the transition to fitness instructing was very natural for me. I have been a Personal Trainer for both large corporate gyms and private clients. I’ve led outdoor bootcamps, instructed a variety of classes, delivered educational workshops, and taught qualified PT’s as a Master Trainer for Virgin Active. I have written exercise related articles for magazines and by request for fellow fitness professionals for their websites. I am a Muscle Activation Techniques therapist (MAT), Resistance Training Specialist (RTS), and also known for being bit of a Kettlebell fanatic!

4) Why do you enjoy working at The Training Room PT?

I get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment helping aspiring Personal Trainers gain new knowledge and skills. It reminds me every day why I entered the industry. It still amazes me now on completion of the course, how far trainer’s progress. The ability to learn and grow as a professional is paramount to success and I pass on my experience to give the competitive edge. We ensure as much practical as the timetable will allow, with workshops such as Stability Ball Training, Core, Resistance Systems, Free Weights, Kettlebells, Aerobics, Circuits and Boxing. We give the students all the support and guidance they need to embark on thriving careers.

5) What is the best thing about your academy?

Apart from a fantastic Tutoring team(!), the facilities are brilliant - we are based in one of the finest David Lloyd clubs in the country. The students are our top priority and we endeavour to make the courses interesting, fun, challenging and a great experience from beginning to end. We also have a skeleton called Colin!.

6) What is your favourite part of the course?

I love the first day of each new course. During the Ice breaker everyone introduces themselves and it is always interesting to hear where people have come from and what has been the motivation for them enrolling with us. Students come from diverse backgrounds; ex-military, office based jobs, sportspeople, straight from College, University Graduates, housewives – it’s endless! It adds to the vibrancy of the training atmosphere. Tutoring wise, I actually enjoy teaching every section of the course. Learning what is best for our bodies still fascinates me.

7) What can students expect from the course?

The qualifications we offer provide students with a springboard into the industry. With CV guidance and Business / Marketing advice, we support them to find employment in their desired direction. It’s not a “certify by attendance” course and hard work is required but the rewards are great. Superb gym facilities and the regular classes we deliver, provide the perfect opportunity for fitness and experience levels to be improved before interviews and employment. The club itself is situated in a pleasant area of North Leeds, with ample free parking. All students have the opportunity to build great friendships and future business colleagues for many years to come.
