The Training Room - Personal Trainer Courses

Kevin Baker

1) What is your job role?

My role as Assistant Tutor is to help with the delivery and smooth running of the course in order to help the students reach their potential. Although the same content is taught in each and every course, never is one course the same as another. Hence a large part of my role involves dealing with student issues, as the 6-week intensive course is just that, intensive.

2) Why are you so passionate about the health and fitness industry?

Having been involved in high level sport from a young age, I have always been passionate about keeping fit and healthy. Therefore I began to develop my knowledge in human anatomy and physiology as I was keen to learn how the human body adapts to the stresses and strains placed upon it. Now armed with a good level of knowledge, I wish to pass on the information that I have learnt to others, firstly through personal training, and now through tutoring aspiring personal trainers.

3) Please provide a brief summary of your previous experience:

I first began to develop my level of understanding of the human body whilst studying A-Level Physical Education, and then through university studying Sports, health and leisure with Management. However it wasn’t until I graduated and begun to take qualifications through the ACSM (Exercise Leader, Health/Fitness Instructor), CHEK Institute (CHEK Exercise Coach) and NASM (Performance Enhancement Specialist) that I really developed my skills within the health and fitness industry. Having started out as a leisure attendant at a hotel gym, as I developed my skills I began taking on personal training clients, eventually stopping all gym shifts and going into freelance personal training. I soon became interested in dealing with sports injuries therefore I gained qualifications in Sports Therapy and Myofascial Release (where I have since been asked to return to the course to lecture on course content), whilst working my way through the CHEK Level I qualification. I then opened my own gym personal training studio in Leeds, helping clients achieve a great variety of health and fitness goals. Today, I take pride in helping budding personal trainers develop their skills in the health and fitness industry.

4) Why do you enjoy working at The Training Room PT?

Being a Tutor to a group of individuals determined to make a good career within the fitness industry is both rewarding and challenging. There is always a good atmosphere within the group as well as between the group and the Tutors. There is a 6-week schedule to stick to, with specific course content to cover, however a course is never the same as the last due to new students asking different questions, having different strengths/weaknesses and having different past experiences to draw from.

5) What is the best thing about your academy?

The location is fantastic. David Lloyd, Leeds is an awesome club with a great range and number of fitness equipment. If an aspiring personal trainer is not motivated to work in this sort of environment, then I don’t know where they will!!

6) What is your favourite part of the course?

I enjoy the Level 3 personal training aspect of the course as students begin to understand HOW to train someone effectively to help them reach their goals.

7) What can students expect from the course?

Top notch facilities with free car parking. An intense 6-week learning curve that will be challenging yet extremely rewarding at the end as it will equip you with everything you need to begin your career within the health and fitness industry.
